How NGOs are Making Indian Cities Cleaner and Healthier

India is facing a huge challenge of providing adequate sanitation and safe water to its growing urban population. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 91 million people in India do not have access to safe water, and 746 million people lack access to household sanitation facilities and toilets. This leads to various health and environmental problems, such as diarrheal diseases, malnutrition, pollution, and loss of dignity.

Many NGOs collaborate with the government, private sector, and communities to implement sustainable solutions for urban sanitation and water services. My Abhinandan is an NGO dedicated to empowering women and children through skill development and social welfare.

About My Abhinandan NGO

My Abhinandan was founded in 2011 by a group of young professionals who wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of the underprivileged sections of society. The NGO operates in various cities across India, such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad, and has reached out to more than 10,000 beneficiaries.

Improving Sanitation and Hygiene

One of the main focus areas of My Abhinandan is to promote cleaner and healthier sanitation practices among the urban poor, especially women and children. The Role of NGOs in a Clean City is to conduct awareness campaigns, community mobilization, and behavior change communication to educate the people about the importance of using toilets, washing hands, and disposing of waste properly. The NGO also facilitates the construction and maintenance of toilets, water points, and waste management systems in slums, schools, and public places, with the help of local partners and donors.

Enhancing Water Supply and Quality

My Abhinandan improves urban water access by installing water filters, rainwater harvesting systems, and solar pumps. The NGO tests and monitors water sources regularly and trains users on their proper use and maintenance. The NGO advocates for urban poor access to safe, affordable water from both government and private sectors.

Empowering Women and Children

My Abhinandan supports women and children by offering vocational training, education, and employment opportunities. The NGO offers courses in computer literacy, tailoring, beautician skills, handicrafts, and entrepreneurship, connecting graduates with employers. The NGO also supports the education and health of children, by providing them with scholarships, books, uniforms, and nutrition supplements.

Contributing to National and Global Goals

My Abhinandan significantly contributes to cleaner, healthier cities and improves the urban poor’s quality of life. The NGO focuses on environmental protection, aligning with initiatives like Swachh Bharat and global Sustainable Development Goals. The NGO exemplifies how civil society can effectively address urban challenges and shape a better future.
