Christmas: A celebration of joy and hope with children
What is Christmas?
Christmas is a Christian festival that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, whom Christians believe is the Son of God. Most Christians observe Christmas on December 25, but some Eastern Orthodox churches use a different calendar and celebrate on January 7. Christmas is also a cultural and commercial event that attracts many non-Christians around the world. It is a time of giving gifts, gathering with family and friends, decorating with festive items, and enjoying special foods. Some of the common symbols of Christmas are the Christmas tree, Santa Claus, reindeer, snowmen, and lights.
Why do people celebrate Christmas?
People have different reasons for celebrating Christmas, depending on their faith, culture, and personal preferences. Some of the usual reasons are:
- To honor the birth of Jesus Christ and his teachings of love, forgiveness, and peace. Christians believe that Jesus is the savior who came to save humanity from sin and death. They attend church services, sing carols, and read the stories of his birth in the Bible.
- To show gratitude and generosity to God and others. Christmas is a season of giving and sharing, as people exchange gifts, donate to charities, and help those in need. Some people follow the example of the wise men, who brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the baby Jesus.
- To celebrate life and joy with family and friends. Christmas is a time of reunion and celebration, as people spend quality time with their loved ones, enjoy festive meals, and have fun. Some people also make new year resolutions and reflect on their goals and dreams.
- To appreciate the beauty and wonder of winter. Christmas coincides with the winter solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year. People decorate their homes and streets with lights, candles, and wreaths to brighten the darkness. They also play with snow, make snowmen, and go sledding.
